BIO
Deb Chesterman met drummer Patrick Riley and guitarist Sam Allyn through the theatre community in their hometown of Chicago back in 2016. Although the trio has been playing together since that time, it wasn’t until meeting bassist Patrick Foley that their sound started to come to fruition. By early 2017 the lineup was complete and the band has been writing ever since.
The next year, with the Waiting In The Dark single, Sugarpulp took the best parts of some classic genres to breed a sound familiar, but their own. Engaging with a riff almost immediately addicting, followed by by the tracks naturally ambient feel, and electro synth break down, there is never a dull moment with the band's come back track following last year's Open Yr Mouth EP release. Honing in on their sound, touring the midwest, and recording new material as much as possible, Waiting In The Dark, is a testament to where they are at with their sound right now.
Although the single does speak volumes for the band, to get a real understanding of where Sugarpulp is coming from, the previous EP should also be heard.
“Through the process of writing ‘Machete’ , our first single, we pinpointed as a group the words ‘Psych’, ‘Dance’, and ‘Rock’ as our guideposts for the work we are currently creating.” says the band of creating the EP.
After a rise through 2018, Sugarpulp really took off in 2019. In February Sugarpulp released their debut LP Teeth, which received international acclaim. Drop D and Kev in Australia called it one of their top 10 albums of all time They took to the road and toured the midwest on the back of the album, and played more live shows in 2019 than ever before at venues like Empty Bottle, Schbuas, Chop Shop, Bling Pig in Ann Arbor, and opening for acts like Midnight Stroll. the band is certainly not new to spreading the music through live performance.
2019 also saw the departure of Patrick Riley and the joining of Brian Becmer on drums. With the new blood, Sugarpulp released the Underwater/Outerspace EP in November. The lead single and title track will drive the band’s first ever music video, as well as a flurry of shows leading into 2020. The energy of the EP has electrified the scene and propels the band into the new decade.
